Preparing for a Phone Interview
Find A Job
Phone interviews can be tricky because you can not see the other person's reactions (facial expressions, body language, etc.)
Here are some tips to help you advance and get some face-to-face time:
- Use a Land Line – This ensures better reception and shows you are not in a rush, but rather have set aside time to talk to the employer
- Remove Distractions – Make sure you are in a quiet, secluded area free of noise and distractions such as roommates, children, pets, etc
- Prepare Notes – One of the best things about phone interviews is that you can have notes right in front of you – take advantage of this! Keep your quick facts of the organization handy and refer to the job description to show you are a great fit. Prepare a list of questions to ask the employer and have that in front of you as well
- Speak Clearly – Don’t mumble or talk too close to the phone! Removing noise from the background will help with this too
- Dress the Part – It may seem silly, but dressing up will help you get in the interview mood and take this more seriously. Even though the interviewer can’t see you, rolling out of bed and taking the call in your pajamas isn’t the best idea
- Smile – Believe it or not, people can hear a smile through the phone. You will feel and sound more energetic and enthusiastic, which will show interest in the position
