LaSalle Network is partnering with a well-known household brand to hire a Director of Transportation. The Director of Transportation will be responsible for overseeing and securing transportation services across various modes, including Truckload, Intermodal and Less-than-Truckload, to meet the company’s domestic transportation needs. This role manages all aspects of carrier operations and relationships, from contracts and performance reviews to cost and service efficiency. The director will work to align transportation providers with the company’s distribution needs, ensuring optimal service at the lowest cost. This includes handling all product categories, such as finished goods and raw materials, with requirements for both temperature-controlled and ambient transportation.
Key duties involve developing strategies and objectives for the transportation function, setting budgets and establishing policies and procedures that align with the company's goals. The Director of Transportation will supervise around 10 employees in the Logistics Department, providing leadership and guidance. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training and conducting performance evaluations, while ensuring that team efforts align with company policies and legal requirements.
Director of Transportation Responsibilities:
- Build and oversee a comprehensive transportation network
- Meet or exceed transportation-related key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Provide strategic leadership to develop programs that meet the evolving needs of internal and external customers
- Leverage expertise in Transportation Management Systems, covering functions such as planning, dispatch, carrier portals and dock scheduling
- Oversee day-to-day transportation operations to ensure goals are met
- Supervise a team of approximately 10 employees, delegating tasks, monitoring their progress and conducting performance reviews
- Manage the department's budget and control expenses
- Regularly review performance against KPIs, implementing corrective actions as needed
- Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations, including Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements
- Recruit, train and mentor employees, fostering growth and accountability within the team
Director of Transportation Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain Management or a related field is required; an MBA is preferred but not mandatory
- 6+ years of relevant management experience, ideally in transportation
- Proven experience managing relationships with external service providers and vendors
- In-depth knowledge of transportation contracts, transportation law and carrier operations, including fleet management
- Expert understanding of the transportation industry, supply chain processes, best practices and compliance regulations
- Skilled in contract negotiation
- Agile and proactive, with the ability to execute projects effectively
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, capable of delivering executive-level presentations
- Demonstrated success in leading teams to meet financial, service and developmental goals
- Ability to analyze data from multiple sources and translate insights into actionable improvement strategies
