Tax Accountant Responsibilities:
- Prepare, review and file monthly, quarterly and annual sales and use tax returns for multiple jurisdictions, ensuring timely and accurate submission
- Conduct research on sales and use tax regulations, including nexus, taxability issues, exemptions and product classifications, to ensure compliance with evolving laws and regulations
- Assist in managing sales and use tax audits by providing necessary documentation, working with auditors, and addressing audit inquiries
- Oversee and manage sales and use tax payments and ensure that liabilities are reconciled between tax filings and accounting records
- Prepare and review sales and use tax accruals and ensure proper recording in the general ledger. Assist with reporting and analysis for internal stakeholders and external auditors
- Identify opportunities to streamline sales and use tax processes and implement improvements for greater efficiency and accuracy
- Manage the preparation and filing of 1099 forms, including 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC and 1099-INT, ensuring accuracy and timely submission to the IRS and vendors. Ensure proper reporting for independent contractors, vendors and other non-employee service providers
- Assist with special tax-related projects as needed, including researching tax legislation and assisting with the implementation of new tax systems or changes
Tax Accountant Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field. CPA or MST is a plus
- 2+ years of experience in sales and use tax compliance, ideally in a corporate environment or public accounting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including VLOOKUP, PivotTables) and accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle). Experience with sales tax automation software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex) is a plus
- In-depth understanding of sales and use tax laws and regulations across multiple jurisdictions (state and local levels). Knowledge of nexus concepts and taxability issues for various industries
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy in tax calculations and filings
