LaSalle Network Publishes White Paper: 'What the Class of 2017 Wants'

Findings Based on Study of 6,000 Upcoming, Recent College Graduates

CHICAGO (May 25, 2017) – LaSalle Network, a national staffing, recruiting and culture firm published today its second annual white paper on what the 2017 graduating class wants in a job and company. This white paper, “What the Class of 2017 Wants,” highlights original data based on a LaSalle Network survey of more than 6,000 upcoming and recent college graduates regarding what they want in their first job and company.

Respondents include those who have graduated with a bachelor’s or associate’s degree so far in 2017, and those expected to graduate this May/June 2017. Thirty-five percent of respondents have accepted a position already and 65 percent of respondents are still unemployed.

Below is a summary of survey findings.

What Matters to Them:

The three most important factors when evaluating a company to work for were compensation, company culture and location.

  • 69 percent of respondents ranked compensation as the #1 factor
  • 61 percent ranked company culture #2
  • 48 percent ranked location #3

The three most important factors when evaluating a role were opportunity for growth, compensation and work-life balance.

  • 70 percent of respondents ranked opportunity for growth as the #1 factor
  • 56 percent of respondents ranked compensation #2
  • 50 percent of respondents ranked work-life balance #3

Salary Expectations:

Unlike the class of 2016, who expected to earn more than they ended up making, 2017 graduates’ salary expectations are in line with what employers are offering.

  • Eighty-three percent of employed respondents are making what they expected or more and Glassdoor was the No. 1 resource graduates used when conducting salary research
  • STEM majors on average expected the highest salary, with 32 percent expecting to make $61,000 or more in their first job

Type of Role:

  • Graduates are open to different types of roles: 48 percent stated they would take some form of temporary or temporary-to-hire position
