Promotion Denied? 4 Steps to Make a Comeback

A development plan was created with management. Metrics were met. Goals were reached. Engagement levels were high. It was time for a promotion. But then—nothing. The promotion was passed on to someone else. 

Promotions are more than just recognition; they’re often key to career growth, new responsibilities, and skill validation. On the flip side, being denied a promotion can feel like a punch in the gut. Take these four steps to help the healing process and prepare for a stronger comeback. 

1. Ask for Feedback 

Whether immediately after hearing the “no” or a few days later, be sure to follow up and ask for constructive feedback. Avoid settling for vague answers—ask specific questions to understand why the promotion was denied. For example, if someone else was chosen, resist comparing yourself to them with bitterness. Instead, let their success inspire you to improve and achieve similar growth.
